Mission

Workplace English certificate courses are designed for advanced English speakers looking to improve their English-language skills and employability here in the United States. Students can earn a certificate in one ore more courses that fit their needs and interests. Certificates allow students to demonstrate their desire to learn, improve, and succeed in the American workforce.

Each class meets once a week for two hours over an eight-week period. Students may enroll in one or more courses during each eight-week session.

ON-SITE: Classes are held at H2EC’s modern Times Square campus, located at 49th and Seventh Avenue for individuals and small groups. Class sizes are small and allow students to learn, practice, and refine their skills in a supportive, energetic, and professional setting.

OFF-SITE: For organizations and larger groups, classes are offered off site at the group’s place of employment. Off-site classes may be suitable for organizations wishing to have a more personalized approach to the course.

Course Descriptions

Workplace English 1: Accent Reduction & Pronunciation (8 Weeks=16 Hours)

This course introduces students to techniques and practical skills which allow for English-language pronunciation improvement. Students will practice pronunciation reinforcement skills for accent reduction. Students will also learn how to build their confidence and comfort when communicating in English so as to reduce pronunciation errors, and speak like a native-English speaker.

Workplace English 2: Effective Business Communication (8 Weeks=16 Hours)

This course introduces students to skills related to interpersonal communication skills such as communicating with a supervisor, with a colleague, and with customers or clients. Among the skills taught in the course, students will learn: how to communicate electronically and in person, how to navigate difficult situations, how to communicate within a collaborative setting, and self-advocacy skills. Productive, positive, and effective communication as it relates to expectations of the American culture will be the focus for this course.

Workplace English 3: Public & Event Speaking (8 Weeks=16 Hours)

This course introduces students to speaking in public and for special events such as meetings, conference, or public relations-related events. Students will learn how to prepare and organize for a speaking event, practice speaking techniques, and how to lead and facilitate groups. Students will learn and practice and refine their public-speaking skills in the classroom so that they are prepared for real, workplace-specific situations.

Workplace English 4: American Business Culture (8 Weeks=16 Hours)

This course introduces students to elements of business culture within the United States. Students will learn: expectations as an employee, proper workplace etiquette, dressing for success, understanding social norms, communicating with supervisors and colleagues, and expectations related to social activities.

Workplace English 5: Speaking Confidence and Fluency (8 Weeks=16 Hours)

This course introduces students to skills and mindsets related to speaking confidently in English. Students will learn how to shape their thinking so that they are able to use their English-language skills in any given situation, in a productive and effective manner. Students will leave the course having the skills and practice necessary to speak with confidence and fluency that will allow for successful communication in English. Fluency improvement skills will be taught so that students can continue to improve even after completion of the course.

Off-Site Courses

The off-site options for the Workplace English Series is available for organizations looking to have any of the Workplace English courses taught at the group’s place of employment. Off-site instruction allows faculty to teach students skills as they relate to their specific organization. The topics and skills taught are the same as the on-site courses, however, off-site instruction allows for a more specific approach for specific organizations.
